Mauricio Pochettino delivers update on Harry Kane injury

Latest News

Kane set for an unexpected return?

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has hinted at a return for star striker Harry Kane ahead of next Saturday's Champions League final in Madrid.

Kane has been ruled out of action since April 9, when he suffered a nasty injury to his ankle in the first leg of Spurs' UCL quarter-final clash against Manchester City. The England front man has not featured for Tottenham since, with it looking likely that he'd miss the highly anticipated Champions League final against Liverpool due to the extent of the knock.

However, it now looks as though he will be fit enough to play a part in next Saturday's do-or-die clash in the Spanish capital, which will give Spurs a huge boost as they look to clinch their first ever Champions League title. Though Pochettino is refusing to say whether or not Kane will definitely return to the fold in six days time, he did seem positive about the progress his main striker is making.

Talking at the club's media day, the 47-year-old said:

"I think Harry Kane is in the last week, Friday and Saturday, starting to be involved with the group.

"Very positive the situation with him.

"We have one week ahead to see how he is progressing. It's so important that he feels well and he's very positive.

"We'll see what happens. I cannot say if he'll be 100% fit or starting, or on the bench or out.

"But good progression, like [Harry] Winks, [Jan] Vertonghen and [Davinson] Sanchez."

Despite not being declared fully fit, England manager Gareth Southgate has included Kane in his preliminary squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League finals in June. Should Kane feature in some capacity in Madrid, then he will without doubt be present in Portugal for England's semi-final bout with the Netherlands next month, massively increasing the Three Lions' chances of success.

Although Spurs have done remarkable well without Kane's services - obtaining a third-placed finish in the Premier League while making it through to the final of the Champions League - having the 25-year-old back in the matchday squad will give the squad a huge boost heading into this clash against Jurgen Klopp's Reds. Kane has netted 24 goals for Spurs this season (all comps) and can produce moments of brilliance from nothing on the big stage.

Midfielder Moussa Sissoko said that there is currently plenty of confidence within the squad.

"The spirit is fantastic, every time we were close to be out but we showed a lot of character to win the game. We know we can challenge against every team," he said.

"I am not scared of Liverpool or any team. We all need to challenge and we have to give our best and if we do it, we can beat any team. In the past we have showed it."
